I said I'd never do this, which just goes to show what a pushover I am -- it's all Jess's fault for ignoring my rants about LJs and sending me an invitation to join and then ducking for cover. Sigh. Seemed stupid and pigheaded to refuse to be dragged (even if with some proforma kicking and screaming) into the modern era. Everyone I know seems to be here already (no, I'm not a trend-setter -- what was your first clue? ), and I do like to hang out with my friends. So, for better or worse, here I am.

Jess, too late, lol. I took a breath and told starwatcher -- just sent the message off to her. Can't believe I'm doing this. I checked out my friends list (using the referrals you gave me for ts talk, etc,) and I'm already feeling overwhelmed! Maybe it won't seem so ... massive once I've got my writing commitments done and don't feel quite so pressed for time. I can see this is a good community, though, to get info on latest stories, etc. Thanks for the invite (I think, lol).

Hi, dear friend. So happy to see you here. It is intimidating at first, but gets lots easier with just a little practice. As Jess said, I have a basic "How-To" in this post; just click on the link -

It explains friending, and how to make italics and bold, but not icons. Jess will have to help you with that. Loading a story document is just cut and paste into the posting box. I haven't covered that yet, but...
a. Write your story in Word, as usual
b. Put {i} and {/i} around italics and {b} and {/b} around bolds (but use < and > instead.)
c. Save to text only, to get rid of the Word formatting.
d. Copy and paste in the posting box
e. You'll have to break long stories (ie, all of yours) into parts.

StarWatcher, hey, thanks for the welcome and your guide is awesome! I've 'friended' you in that I've clicked on the plus sign and now you show up in my friends' list. So I feel like I've actually acommplished something! And thanks for the posting info. I think I'll probably just post the links to new stories for now rather than get into coding my own for bold and italics. But this will be really useful, I think, if and when I get into the story challenges and Sentinel Thursday. For now, I just have to get the other stories done! But, let's see, four done and almost five since August and four more commitments to go. Should be done by Christmas, lol! Oh, and, hey, sweetie, thanks for not saying 'I told you so!' Given how long you've been encouraging me to take this plunge, you'd be more than entitled.

Don't worry about learning how to handle everything at once. I got a journal to be able to post in sentinel_thurs and otherwise didn't post in my own LJ for over a year. I only started using icons about... three months ago? *g*

Give yourself some time and you'll figure things out as you need them. So long as you can post and comment and figure out how to friend/join comms, you've got all the basics you need to get started. Have fun. :-)

Starwatcher said you were here, and since I love your fiction (which she also recommended to me), I've taken the liberty of friending you so that I won't miss anything new you might write and post. No need to friend back--I virtually never post, because I got a LJ mainly to be able to comment. I've gone more than a year without icons, myself, but I'm just starting to dip my toe into that pond; I'm getting some advice from LJ friends, and if I figure it out and can try to emulate starwatcher's fine intro to LJ guide, I'll pass it on to you. If you will indeed be posting mainly or lots of fiction, you might want to explore the LJ FAQs about how to add those entries to your "Memories" to make them easy for you and others to find; you can also use "Memories" to keep things like starwatcher's LJ guide easy to find, without having to bookmark it on your computer.

Cindy, I'm delighted to be friended and will friend you. As it happens, StarWatcher is just finishing a beta on one story, that will be posted soon. It's called Desert Wind and is a crossover with SG1. She has another story for beta that will be posted sometime in mid to late November. I'll be announcing urls on my site when stories go up.
