I just saw the note below from JD Nicoll in my 'network'. For those who aren't familiar with his work, Farley Mowat has been one of Canada's leading contemporary writers for much of my lifetime. I fear the report below is true, and it sure explains the cancers three aunts who lived together in that area had, along with many of their neighbours, even though cancer isn't prevalent in the family. The things we don't get told, no doubt to avert 'a panic'. ::shudders::

From wikipedia:

November 10, 1950 – Rivière-du-Loup, Québec, Canada – Non-nuclear detonation of an atomic bomb

Returning one of several U.S. Mark 4 nuclear bombs secretly deployed in Canada, a USAF B-50 had engine trouble and jettisoned the weapon at 10,500 feet (3,200 m). The crew set the bomb to self-destruct at 2,500 ft (760 m) and dropped over the St. Lawrence River. The explosion shook area residents and scattered nearly 100 pounds (45 kg) of uranium (U-238) used in the weapon's tamper. The plutonium core ("pit") was not in the bomb at the time.

Not only that but it tangentally involved Farley Mowat

In the summer of 1954, Mowat was sailing down the St. Lawrence River, making an “Eastern Passage” from Montreal to Halifax. A deckhand “spotted a large, corpse-white something just beneath the surface directly in our path,” he writes. Mowat swung the tiller hard and avoided a collision, but recognized the semi-submerged object as a six-metre beluga whale, clearly sick or injured.

Further east, from an old sailor, he learned of a horrific explosion that had occurred in these waters four years before—the result, apparently, of an American plane having jettisoned several bombs. Almost half a century passed, Mowat writes, before he pieced together the whole story.

An American bomber had run into engine trouble while transporting a version of “Fat Man,” the nuclear bomb that in 1945 had obliterated the Japanese city of Nagasaki. The pilot, acting on standing orders, released the bomb into the St. Lawrence before attempting an emergency landing. The official version claimed an empty “Fat-Man casing” and three conventional bombs were released, but admitted that the blast “was felt for 25 miles.”

Mowat flashes forward to a 1988 New York Times article. It described how, since 1950, “a mysterious die-off of beluga whales” in the St. Lawrence had shrunk the colony from 1,200 to 450. It noted also that the area “has Canada’s highest level of human birth defects, although no direct cause-effect relationship has been shown.”

I like how they try to imply the US may have covertly nuked Canada without outright saying it. Yields on Mark 4s ran from 1 to 31 KT; not sure what this one would have had.

::PLEASE PASS THIS ON::

It's Monday, the 7th and the Final Payment Due Date for all items and animal adoptions is Saturday, the 12th.

Until then, ALL items unsold are still open, including the Bidding Items located here:
http://gmfor-moonridge.livejournal.com/19328.html
All Open Bidding Items are now "First One-First Won" meaning that for AT LEAST a donation of $10 (unless otherwise noted as being lower), the item is yours if your email reaches me first. The original "First One-First Won" items that remain open are available for the price set by the individual who donated it/them.

Same goes for the Special Donated Items & Make A Wish Items which can be found here:
http://gmfor-moonridge.livejournal.com/20005.html

Animals remain available for adoption up to October 12th as well!!
http://gmfor-moonridge.livejournal.com/19905.html

Please remember if you take any of the open items, and plan to pay by check, please do so PRIOR to October 12th so your check will reach the Zoo BY that date. Paypals can be done ON the 12th!

FINAL NOTE: Now is the time to double check the site and all pages if you've won, taken, granted a wish, adopted an animal AND PAID. If I've received:
A) A copy of your PAYPAL, or
B) Both your email with check number and info AND confirmation from the Zoo of receipt of same
then your name will be GREEN.

If you've paid but your name is still RED, email me ASAP.

SPECIAL NOTE:
In addition, if you won one of the GMOH calendars or the PHOTO, or any of the items offered by Marj for Garett's signature at GMOH, and you're paying and sending me proof, DON'T FORGET TO INCLUDE YOUR ADDRESS - or else no CALENDAR or PHOTO or OTHER won items signed by Garett!!!

Thank you, and in the next couple of days, I'll be continuing the Connect Notices AND sending out a notice announcing the "tentative" monies raised during our 10th Anniversary Moonridge Auction and Animal Adoption!

Given the latest round of concerns about how LJ's Russian owners may handle certain accounts, I've finally copied all of my LJ stuff over to Dreamwidth and plan to the DW site more actively. I hope I've set everything up properly. If you're posting there, too, and haven't 'friended' me there, please do. I'm worried about losing links with people by moving there.
arianna: (Cheers)
::PLEASE FORWARD::

With the end of the auction come the Paypals and checks! As you pay for your 'winnings', don't forget to send me your Proof of Payment (copy of Paypal or Check/Money order scan or info) because without that, I can't connect you to the donator - and then no WINNINGS!

It's also the time I start sending out CONNECT NOTICES to those who donated items and the fans who 'won' AND paid for them. The original donator will receive an email with the winner/s in the CC: section. Once received, it's up to the donator to start talking to their winner.

The Donated Items Pages will show by the 'taken'/'won' items whether it's been paid (it will be in GREEN) and whether the Connect Notice has gone out. And remember, all WON items have been MOVED to the bottom of the page. The unpaid items are in RED.

This is where you must be vigilant - check daily once you've paid to ensure your name has gone GREEN - this proves I received your Proof of Payment. Also check to see those important words, "Connect Notice Sent".

For Special Donated Items, I'll send the email ONLY to the individual who donated the item/s, and in the body of the email wlll be the list of PAID winners and their email addy so she can then begin to contact all her 'winners' to let them know how they'll receive their 'winnings'. I will NOT send out this email until at least HALF the people who signed up for the item/s have PAID.

"But aly, some items weren't 'sold' - and I'd like a couple of them. Is it too late, even for the "Bidding Items"??"

Why, No dear FAN, it's NOT too late, especially for the First One-First Won items, the Special Donated Items and Make A Wish Items! The items will remain up until October 12th, as will the animals!

If you have any questions, email me at:

ATTENTION TO ALL THOSE WHO DONATED ITEMS FOR THE ACTIVE BIDDING!

If your item did NOT sell, please contact me about making it a First One-First Won Item to be available up to October 12th, in order to earn more money for the Zoo.

THE AUCTION IS STILL ACTIVE, STILL ALIVE, HAS BEEN EXTENDED...

Get the idea yet? Yes, we're extended the event for an extra week! The new ending date is:

SEPTEMBER 28th at MIDNIGHT and the new Final Donation Payment Due Date is now OCTOBER 12th!

We have 39 items for bidding with 22 of them having bids. Out of 26 "First One-First Won" items, we have TEN items left and all you have to be is the "First One" to send me your email to be the One who WON the item/s! We only have 14 Special Donated items, and of those, there are SEVEN "unlimited" items (meaning for EVERYONE who donates the required amount) available for as low as $5 to no higher than $25, with most being in the $5 - $10 range! In the "limited" group of Special Donations, there are FIVE great items that still have slots available, including a new item loaded only a couple of days ago! These also range from only $5 to $25!

And don't forget the WISHES! We had 10 wishes to start and have ONLY four wishes are left that need granting!

Our animals are being adopted very slowly and, so far, have raised $1,200+ which is a few thousand below normal. The auction itself has raised, so far, $1800 - which explains why it's been extended. Oh, and you can now go to the Adoption page and see WHO the new parents are for each animal, and how much each animal has earned for the Zoo!

The first year Garett appeared at Moonridge (2001), the TS fans raised approx. $5,000 - and that was by simply donating to his unofficial site (no auction, no animals to adopt). We did about the same in 2002. In 2003, it was announced that the money coming in was far lower than in the two previous years, and that's how the auction was born. You all managed to raise approx. $8,000 via your bidding and adopting.

So what does all that mean? Simply this: if the auction had ended on Saturday, we wouldn't even have reached the amount raised in 2001 - and as in 2003, somehow, having Garett hear that, seemed to be heartbreaking. So the hope is, in these trying times, that we can raise what we managed in 2001. Sure, it would be great to meet any of the auction years, but yeah, times are really tough for all of us - and it HAS been 10 long years of auction, and 12 total of money-raising for the Zoo.

That's a record for ANY fandom and one to be proud of.

We also had a lot going against us this year, like losing thefreeauction.com site, starting so late in the year, and still having no word on the Zoo's move, thanks to the San Bernadino Board of Supervisors, who STILL haven't put the Zoo on their agenda - so don't blame the Zoo, fellow fans!

In conclusion, YOU STILL HAVE A WEEK TO FIND GIFTS FOR THE HOLIDAYS, GRANT WISHES, ADOPT ANIMALS (a great gift for a child or grandchild), AND PUT YOURSELF DOWN FOR SPECIAL DONATED ITEMS!!!

No matter what - THIS FANDOM ROCKS!

THURSDAY at 12:01AM PST is the LAST CHANCE you have to BID on the VERY SPECIAL GMOH KEEPSAKE CALENDARS that will be AUTOGRAPHED and PERSONALIZED by Garett this weekend!!!

TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, THE 18TH, AT 11:59PM PST, IS THE FINAL DAY AND TIME TO SEND ME YOUR DEDICATIONS TO GARETT (IN ORDER TO MAKE IT TO HIM FOR THE GMOH CON)! EVEN IF YOU'VE NOT BID YET, BUT PLAN TO, OR ADOPT, OR PUT DOWN FOR A SPECIAL DONATED ITEM, BUT HAVEN'T DONE IT YET, SEND YOUR DEDICATION NOW!

For a fandom that keeps saying we're still alive - Garett won't have much proof of it because as of now - he has exactly FOUR (4) dedications sent in. That's it.

So are we dead? Or is it just the auction? I know things are tough - boy howdy do I, but a dedication to a guy whose brought us so much joy? And there are so many items that cost so little in the auction this year. Some wonderful items that showcase the immense talent and love of TS fans - and yet....

Not only have only four people sent in their dedications, but we only have four more days of the auction and its been the slowest one in our 10 year history. Now, you may be saying, "But the auction always picks up at the end" and you're right, but the auction has always had a certain rhythm: Fast out of the gate, slows around the turn, speeds up half-way through, slows again, then a mad dash across the finish line. But not this year.

This year, we haven't even come close to the above.

Would it be worth extending for another week (can't extend the calendars or dedications, though)? There's only been 10 animals adopted by six fans - SIX. That's it. And that's new too, because every year, there's a percentage of fans who don't bid, but adopt so adoptions were a constant throughout the auction - except this year. Maybe everyone is actually waiting until the end so they send in just that "one" Paypal? *G* Except - folks still emailed me with the names of the animals AND they wanted to know who had the least and most. Not this year.

And while every Keepsake Calendar has a bid, that's all they have. JUST ONE BID. For something only a handful of people in the entire fandom will have access to and only SIX more via the auction. That stuns me.

Maybe ten years is too long. Maybe so many summers without a Sentinel Day... or maybe our cheerleading days are over....

But we'll still hope.

Hey, there's over a hundred pretty neat donations on the LJ auction site and an astonishing number have NO bids. We're over a week into the auction and I've never, ever seen things moving so slowly. I know the economy is hard for a lot of us, myself included, and I know we're all tired of the Zoo never seeming to make any progress on getting into their new quarters, but that's not the Zoo's fault, sure not for lack of trying for years now to get all the government approvals required, and it's sure not the animals' fault. They still need support -- anything helps.

Have you checked out the LJ auction site? Gone to see what's on offer this year? Isn't there anything you could wish for, a story or artwork, a songvid, that you'd be willing to donate to the Zoo if someone could make that wish come true? There are calendars that Garett will be signing and will personalize for each winner. Everyone needs a calendar, right? And they'd make a nice gift to a fandom buddy. There are hand knit goods and songvids and art and episode videos and stories and ... well just so much great stuff and adorable animals for adoption, too.

And on top of all that, if you donate or make a bid on any item, you can send a personal message to Garett, one that may well be read to him at the GMOH Con next weekend and which will go into a book for him to take with him. This is your chance to for sure get a message to him, of appreciation, of gratitude, of good wishes. Surely, there's some positive message you'd like to send along to him?

Please, at least go and take a look at the webpages with the donated items and the animal adoptions, if you haven't already. Please, make a bid, be willing to donate, even a minimum fifteen dollars on one item. Every dollar goes to the support of the animals. And please, feel free to pass this message along to encourage others to also go to take a look and hopefully decide to help. Here's the link for the donated items, the info about the message to Garett, and this page has links to all the other relevant pages like the animal adoption page and the general info about the auction. Please, take a look at all the good stuff that's on offer:

We are ONE week into the 10th Anniversary of the online Moonridge Auction and we went from 14 items just a few days before start date - to almost 100! Yes, that's about 100+ less than usual, but it's also 86 *more* than I thought we'd have this year! I expect by the time you read this, the number of items will have gone a bit higher too.

There has been a wrinkle in the auction; namely the loss of thefreeauction.com site, which has forced us to use the 'email me with your bid' mode of auctioning off the forty (40) items donated for the "Active Bidding". It's very important you read the new instructions on HOW TO BID now (link at end of message).

In addition, a few new 'perks' have been added this week and they're FANTASTIC!

1. The opportunity for fans participating in the auction to 'send' a "10th Anniversary Moonridge Auction Dedication to Garett" (your 'thank you to him, so to speak), which will be 'read/given' to him at the upcoming GMOH con in Birmingham, England. Remember, the auction ends the day GMOH begins! (more info provided in link at end of message)

In addition, the GMOH committee have donated six (6) "2013 GMOH KEEPSAKE CALENDARS" to be signed and personalized by Garett the weekend of the 21st, as well as a special, one-of-a-kind photo just for the Auction! To find out more, use link at end of message!

I'm still taking donated items every day, so keep checking the site! And if you have questions, email me at: alysideburns@gmail.com.

THANK YOU!

We're three days into our 10th ANNIVERSARY MOONRIDGE AUCTION and have several new items just added to our Donated Items page (http://gmfor-moonridge.livejournal.com/19328.html)!!!

And don't forget the ANIMALS (http://gmfor-moonridge.livejournal.com/19905.html) who need YOU! So far, only TWO people have adopted any animals (Scotland, you're way ahead of the rest of the world on adopting animals!)

In addition, if you think our First One-First Won items are all gone, guess again! We have EIGHTEEN (18) items out of 26 still AVAILABLE!

If you need to see any of the items 'close up' as opposed to the small versions up on the page, just email aly.

We have some spectacular items up, including many hand-made or embellished items, like scarves/cowls etc from Audrey (Mrs. Sweetpeach) and several great sweat shirts/t-shirts beautifully embellished by Spacecat!

As for Memorabilia, we have autographed photos and several items put up by Marj that will be personalized by Garett while Marj attends GMOH on the 21st or 22nd!!! These are HOT items! We also have several fantastic ZINE offerings as well, and of course, STORIES.

And don't forget to check EVERY day as new items are being added continually AND you can check the BIDDING! The page is updated every day between 4pm PST and 'god knows when', so if you're checking at that time, the page won't show new items or bids, which means you need to keep refreshing the page.

Well, new several hours ago but my service provider's server from hell hardly ever connects to the net anymore. I can only hope this link will last enough to post this, in the event you've not already seen it!

::PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO ALL INTERESTED PARTIES!::

REMINDER: There is a new procedure for BIDDING on items this year that would normally be found at thefreeauction.com site - but because that site seems to be BROKEN - we can't use it. TO FIND OUT HOW THE NEW PROCEDURE IS WORKING, GO HERE: http://gmfor-moonridge.livejournal.com/ OR
HERE: http://gmfor-moonridge.livejournal.com/19328.html (the page showing all DONATED ITEMS including those you will be bidding on).

IN ADDITION: The entire GMFOR_MOONRIDGE site has been corrected to remove mention of thefreeauction site (other than announcing its lack of viability) and almost every page has the same announcement about the CHANGE IN PROCEDURE FOR BIDDING.

Furthermore, the LINKS on the LEFT side of every page now include the FAQ, DEFINITIONS, DONATED ITEMS and ANIMAL ADOPTIONS for this year.

You should have no difficulty navigating or finding what you need - I HOPE. If you do, please email ALY at alysideburns@gmail.com

I'd also like to welcome two new members of the MOONIES (those wonderful ladies who pass on all these announcements to groups I may not belong):
MAB & SNYCOCK!

REMEMBER: THE AUCTION IS ON, WE'VE STARTED, and already items are gone from the FIRST ONE-FIRST WON page, so check the site daily to see what's been ADDED and what's been sold or SOLD OUT. And of course, check every day to see who has the highest bid on items you want.

And finally, don't forget the PROXY BIDDER! That's the person YOU delegate to BID for you (by sending an email to ALY per the new instructions on every page) if you're NOT going to be available to bid before 12:00 MIDNIGHT ON THE 21st of SEPTEMBER!!! GMOH ATTENDEES - I"M TALKING TO YOU TOO! :)

THANK YOU ALL!

KaleeCat came up with the following great idea to make it easier for Aly to monitor bids per item as they come in:

Please put the item # & your bid amount in the subject line like this example-- Subject: Bid $10- for Item # GMAUCAA#1

In the body put your handle/preferred name (as your name will be public on the LJ page), and list again the item you are bidding on (the item #) AND the amount you are bidding.

Go forth and bid!

If you live in the CDT US ZONE, you're TWO (2) hours AHEAD of PST
If you live in the EDT US ZONE, you're THREE (3) hours AHEAD of PST
If you live in Arizona, You're MST, which is, oddly enough, the same as PST...right? *scratches head*

BTW: Canada is pretty much the same as above

If you live anywhere else in the world, go here: http://www.worldtimezone.com/ to find your country/time zone to see the difference, or to the World Clock Convertor, here: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html

Could I BE anymore helpful? *G*

I could? Oh, yeah, the list of LINKS!

This is a link to sign a petition to encourage the network to either renew the series (not much hope) or at least do a 2 hour tv movie or 2-3 mini series to wrap this show up. It could have had the perfect ending but the producers let it wrap with a hideous cliffhanger that will now never be resolved. This is casual cruelty for the show's cast and crew as well as for the loyal viewers. If this is how A&E rewards loyalty, then maybe they can do without mine and around 4 million other people who tuned in to this show each week. If you agree that this is no way to end a show, no way to treat viewers or the show itself, then I hope you'll sign the petition at the url below, and I hope you'll pass this link on to encourage others to sign as well.

I don't know who I'm more pissed with, the network or the producers. The show had a pretty good and very loyal following, was generally well done and had engaging characters and okay story lines. They had the perfect opportunity for a great happy ending wrap up with the final ep, everything in place, just perfect, but no, no, they have to gun down the lead actor making him perhaps fatally late for his own wedding. Because now we'll never know, right? Stupid rotten producers, doing a cliffhanger like this when they didn't know the show would be renewed. I could just smack them so hard. They could at least film a different ending and reshow the last ep with the wrap up at the wedding. God, makes me feel absolutely sick. Yes, yes, I know these are just characters. Like Iolaus was just a character, and Blair was just a character. But dammit, my right brain doesn't understand they aren't real. My right brain just knows it loves them and now it feels really, really bad. Even to weeping ....

I hate networks and I hate tv and I may stop watching again, like I did for 5 years when they killed off Iolaus. This is just totally unacceptable.

Hey, I'm terrible at knowing how to imbed urls but go to www.climatenamechange.org and watch the video. Personally, I thought it was very compelling and if you share my view, sign the petition and recommend it on your LJ and Facebook.
